               M*** [DEZALLIER D'ARGENVILLE, Antoine Joseph].
L'HISTOIRE NATURELLE ECLAIRCIE DANS UNE DE SES PARTIES
PRINCIPALES, LA CONCHYLIOLOGIE.... Paris: Chez de Bure 1757.
Second Edition. ...QUI TRAITE DES COQUILLAGES DE MER, DE
RIVIERE ET DE TERRE; OUVRAGE DANS LEQUEL ON TROUVE UNE
NOUVELLE METHODE LATINE & FRANCOISE DE LES DIVISER; AUGMENTE
DE LA ZOOMORPHOSE, OU REPRESENTATION DES ANIMAUX A COQUILLES,
AVEC LEURS EXPLICATIONS. Two parts in one quarto (8-1/2" x
11-3/4") volume bound in contemporary calf with
gilt-decorated spine and a gilt-lettered red morocco spine
label; xxii, 394, [4], 84, cvii, [1] pages. Separate title
pages, each printed in red and black, with a half title page
for the second part. Illustrated with 41 full-page
engravings and elaborate engraved head- and tail-pieces.
Includes the Appendix with 3 engravings of rare shells,
often lacking. In the First Edition of this book (1742),
d'Argenville, secretary to the French King, introduced the
term "conchology." This title was one of the first attempts
to give the public a simple way of classification of shells
and is noteworthy for its beautiful engravings. The title
page and frontispiece have a small library blindstamp which
is not present on the other plates or the text. Even, mild
browning throughout. The leather is rather worn and rubbed
with some splitting to the joints, but the covers are tight
and secure. Very Good and quite uncommon complete. $2500
