Darling, Sharon S. CHICAGO METALSMITHS. Chicago Historical Society: 1977.
An important study of the Arts & Crafts and Victorian silver work and
workers in this influential and dynamic silversmithing community, as well
as including the work of modern crafters who continue to work there. The
text includes biographical information, and is fully illustrated with
crisp b/w photographs, including many marks. Hardcover. 9"x9", 141 pages,
155 b/w illustrations; a nice copy. [02884] $150.00

Hill, Harry W. MARYLAND'S COLONIAL CHARM PORTRAYED IN SILVER. Baltimore;
privately printed:1938. The story of the 200-odd piece silver service
presented to the cruiser U.S.S. Maryland in 1906, and later given to the
battleship of the same name. The service, created by the Kirk company of
Baltimore, is decorated with scenes and personages from Maryland history,
and is among the most intricate and unusual of the U.S. Navy's silver
services. Hardcover. 7"x10", 269 pages, plus 38 b&w plates; a very nice
copy. [29972] $225.00

Hipkiss, Edwin J. THE PHILIP LEFFINGWELL SPALDING COLLECTION OF EARLY
AMERICAN SILVER. Boston; Published for the Museum of Fine Arts by the
Harvard University Press: 1943. A singular collection of fifty pieces of
American silver by 30 craftsmen; 32 of these pieces were made by 16
craftsmen who worked or were born in the 17th century. The catalog is
elegantly produced, and features fine gravure illustrations, with many
photographs of decorative details and marks. Hardcover. 8"x10", 84 pages,
b/w illustrations; covers with a light stain across the bottom and on one
side for a few inches, mostly visible in raking light; slight mark on rear
over; overall a nice copy. [04150] $175.00

THE PICKMAN SILVER DEPOSITED WITH THE ESSEX INSTITUTE, December, 1902.
Reprinted from the Historical Collections of the Essex Institute, Vol.
XXXIX, No.2, 1902. An offprint describing how two magnificent pieces of
colonial silver -a two-handled covered presentation cup and a montieth,
were returned to Massachusetts as part of a bequest. As is often the case
with scholarly material of this period, great attention is given to the
history of the Pickman family in Colonial times as well as the houses they
lived in, and little attention is given to the silver itself. The cup is
pictured on the frontispiece and the montieth in a small halftone in the
text. Hardcover. 6.5"x9.5", 23 pages plus 6 b/w plates and one b/w
illustration in the text; original card covers bound into newer cloth;
ex-Boston Athenaeum with labels and an armorial bookplate; text slightly
browned, a few small chips, but a nice copy. [03394] $100.00

Pleasants, J. Hall & Howard Sill. MARYLAND SILVERSMITHS 1715-1830. With
Illustrations of Their Silver and Their Marks and with a Facsimile of the
Design Book of William Farris. Baltimore; 1930. Printed by the Lord
Baltimore Press in an edition of 300 copies. An important regional study,
but more than that, because the authors' text delves into facets of
silversmithing which were common to all Colonial and Federal silversmiths.
Research into original records and histories provided an overview of the
silversmiths' lives and work which should be read by any student of
American silver. An important history as well as a handsome example of
bookmaking. Hardcover. 9.5"x12.5", 324 pages, plus 67 b/w plates. Light
cover rubbing, a little soil, etc., hinges a bit shaken. [03669] $400.00
