ANON. TEJINA NO TANE. [HANDBOOK OF MAGIC]. Tokyo, ND [1860-77]. Late Edo to
early Meiji. Complete in one volume. Title page, introduction and 38 pages
each with a trick in Japanese illustrated with a quite graphic and clear
woodcut on each page. Absolutely Fine condition, and very rare thus.
Unnoted in the National Diet Library, which is the Japanese repository for
all Meiji books but also unnoted in KSM which is the bibliography of all
books earlier than Meiji. An ephemeral magic book for amateur or
professional Japanese magicians. The tricks in this one, unlike my last are
all Japanese originals, with no borrowing from Western sources as yet. This
is the second Japanese magic book I have had this year, and I am astonished
at finding another so quickly. I only have had one other over some 40 years
of bookselling and searching the shops in both Japan and the USA. $2500.00
