WITTY, FACETIOUS, AND SATIRICAL VERSE SELECTED FROM THE WRITINGS OF BRITISH
AND AMERICAN POETS.
Boston: Dana Estes & Company, (1902). First printing, Full cloth, Octavo,
xxiv, 407 pages, 15 black & white tissue-guarded plates. Very good.
      Surely the mighty Casey holds a place beside Paul Bunyan in American
folklore, and this the first appearance of baseball's most famous poem in a
hardcover anthology, published in October, 1902. First state of the first
printing, with "Casey" wrongly attributed to Joseph Quinlan Murphy. Bound in
green cloth with gilt-stamped upper board featuring the faces of two
jesters, a border-ruled title block, and winged horse's head. Top edge gilt.
Prior owner bookplate on front pastedown and prior owner name, address, and
date (10/27/1902) on half title. Some mild extremity rubs and a few
scattered spots to lower board. Rear endpaper splitting along hinge and some
separation at binding between frontispiece and preceding leaves. Pages are
lightly age toned. An old newspaper clipping laid in has resulted in some
acidic browning to pages 150 and 151 (not near "Casey" which begins on page
297). All in all a very handsome copy.    $1250.00
