Dufresne, L., & Thomas Edward Bowdich.] TAXIDERMY: or, the Art of
Collecting, Preparing, and Mounting Natural History. For the Use of
Museums and Travellers. London; Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown:
1820. First English edition, from the 2nd French.

A general treatise on the best methods available for mounting and
preserving birds, mammals and other natural history specimens by a
specialist at the Paris Museum of Natural History. Dufresne's work was
translated and adapted by Thomas Edward Bowdich, a naturalist and traveler
who added material, at the end of the volume, specifically for world
travelers on such topics as packing specimens and adequately annotating
them; this appears to have been drawn from an 1820 survey by Charles Louis
Bourdet and others at the Jardin du Roi at Paris.

It includes a helpful country-by-country list of the most desirable
specimens a traveler can acquire- for instance, if you find yourself in
Madagascar and have extra room in your trunk, pack hedgehogs and lemurs.
Taxidermy, and indeed natural history collecting as a whole, was in a
state of flux and development in this period, and this is a very
interesting study from a number of standpoints. Bowdich died in Gambia in
1824, but his widow continued his work and published several noted natural
history collections of her own, as well as subsequent editions of this
title. Subsequent editions were published in 1821, 1823, 1835 and 1843.
OCLC locates 9 copies of this first English edition. Hardcover.
4.25"x7.25", 168 pages, plus 5 engraved plates; bound in period quarter
leather with marbled boards; spine label rubbed away, some cover wear and
rubbing; heraldic bookplate; some light scattered spotting internally, and
