One of 30 Copies on Imperial Japan Paper-

Halsey, R.T. Haines. PICTURES OF EARLY NEW YORK ON DARK BLUE STAFFORDSHIRE
POTTERY, together with pictures of Boston and New England, Philadelphia,
the South and West.

New York; Dodd, Mead and Company: 1899.
Edition limited to 268 copies on hand-made
paper and 30 copies on Imperial Japan Paper.

This copy one of 30 on Imperial Japan Paper.

An important book on this popular subject, because although not the first,
it remains one of the most comprehensive. It is also certainly one of the
most spectacular and elegantly designed, with color reproductions that are
vibrant and subtle at the same time. Solon wrote in 1906: "(a) handsome
volume... the expensive substitution of heliogravure for the usual
half-tone process for the reproduction (is) a luxury which is the
particular feature of the book". The resemblance of the work to the
elegant books of William Loring Andrews is not coincidental. The young
Halsey (35 at the time this was published) was a friend and admirer of
Andrews, and in 1900 he became a fellow member of the Grolier Club with
the famed antiquarian. Henry Watson Kent, in his memorial note about
Halsey in the Walpole Society's 1942 Notebook, writes-

"It was just at the end of the decade, 1899, that R.T. issued his first
book. He and his wife had assembled, along with their other collections, a
complete collection of Staffordshire blue and white pottery, which was now
catalogued and published under the title "Pictures of Early New York on
dark blue Staffordshire Pottery... The volume was printed by Walter
Gilliss in sumptuous style; and to one who knew R.T., Mr. Andrews -whose
guiding hand is seen in it- and the printer, it brings back memories of
perfectionists".

Hardcover. 8"x11", 329 pages, color plates and illustrations; bound in
vellum-like parchment with gilt rules and a colored plate on the cover;
covers slightly bowed, and with some soil and several small worn spots;
contents fine; a nice copy of a very scarce edition. [05616] $1,200.00
