An autograph leaf (by a previous owner) of explanation on the verso of the
front free endpaper records that this work was founded on a real occurrence and
identifies the unnamed woman as Ann Northey. It goes on to say that her son
attempted to suppress the scandal against his mother’s character by buying up
and destroying all the copies he could find.
