1.  READ, Collinson.  The American Pleader's Assistant, Being a
Collection of Approved Declarations, Writs, Returns, and
Proceedings in the Several Actions Now in Use Within the United
States. Cohen 9272.  Published by I. Riley, & Co. No. 1, City
Hotel, Broad-Way [etc.], New-York, 1806.  Contemporary sheep, spine

First edition of one of the earliest American works on the law of
pleading (the third located by Cohen), whose compiler, Collinson
Read, was one in a longish line of Pennsylvania lawyers and the
author of several other works; arranged by action.

2.  RUNNINGTON, Charles.  History, Principles and Practice,
(Ancient and Modern,) of the Legal Remedy of Ejectment; and the
Resulting Action for Mesne Profits; the Evidence (in General)
Necessary to Sustain and Defend Them [etc.].  Printed for G.G. and
J. Robinson, Pater-Noster Row [etc.], London, 1795.  Contemporary

The uncommon first edition of the last major treatise upon
ejectment, the all-important procedural device which, in Maitland's
words, "[b]y means of piling fiction upon fiction" essentially
supplanted the medieval real actions; six copies in RLIN.

3.  [SEDITION AND THE FRENCH REVOLUTION].  The Trial of Joseph
Gerrald, Delegate from the London Corresponding Society, to the
British Convention. Before the High Court of Justiciary, At
Edinburgh . . . for Sedition [etc.]. Not in McCoy.  Printed for
James Robertson [and six others], Edinburgh, [1794?].  Contemporary

The principal contemporary account of the trial of Gerrald, one of
the "Martyrs of Scotland", convicted of sedition soon after the
onset of the French Revolution, still a blot on Scots law;
transported, he died shortly after reaching Botany Bay.

4.  SMITH, Horace.  A Treatise on the Law of Negligence. From the
Second English Edition.  The Blackstone Publishing Company,
Philadelphia, 1887.  Contemporary 3/4 sheep, rubbed, joints

The torts treatise by the police court magistrate whose poetry (and
that of his ancestors) Holmes greatly admired--"the delightful
'vers de societe' of [Judge Smith]"; arranged by standard of care,
ordinary care distinguished from other standards.

Right of Petitioning Set Forth . . . Answered, Paragraph by
Paragraph . . . to undeceive the Minds of those that are prejudic'd

Only edition of the detailed response to Lord Somers' classic
argument in support of the fundamental right of the people to
petition the King and Parliament, premised on natural law and Magna
Carta; uncommon, four copies in this country in RLIN.

Represented as the first American trial in which the use of
strychnine was proven, Hersey murdering his fiancee's three-month
pregnant sister after the fiancee's never-explained death;
presentation copy from B.W. Harris, the successful prosecutor.

First American edition of the only early work published in this
country on powers, one of the future lord chancellor's two
principal works, and, in Holdsworth's words, "by far the most
comprehensive and learned" treatise on the subject.

The legal manual which essentially reigned for the entire 18th
century in this country, arranging the law alphabetically by
subject; this edition contains the revenue laws leading to the
Whiskey Rebellion of 1792, omitted from subsequent editions.
