O'Leary/from W B Yeats/July 21 / 94." The Irish patriot O'Leary
(1830-1907), who owned the largest library of Irish books in his day,
was perhaps Yeats's most important mentor nurturing the poet's
inclination towards an Irish nationalism. He was immortalized in the
refrain from Yeats's poem "September 1913" from RESPONSIBILITIES (1914):
"Romantic Ireland's dead and gone,/It's with O'Leary in the grave."
Yeats wrote about O'Leary at length in his TREMBLING OF THE VEIL, noting
among other things that O'Leary found almost all the subscribers for his
first book THE WANDERINGS OF OISIN. Modern bookplate on the front
pastedown. Paper aged as usual with a brief tear to one page.Very Good
with a magnificent association. $25,000
