Please excuse my error, I left out the price. A History of British Birds, 6
volumes, by Rev. F.O. Morris, 2nd Edition. $2,200.00. pub. Bell and Daldy,
London, 1870.
 365 hand wood engravings,each full page in color. Six volumes beautifully
bound in heavy decorative blind stamped dark green cloth. Each volume has a
different gilt bird illustration stamped to the front board, blind stamped
to rear; elaborate gilt title, vol. # and pond scene to each spine. Color
Frontispiece in consecutive volumes; (I) Griffon Vulture; (II Jay; (III)
Crossbill; (IV) Black Grouse; (V) Curlew Sandpiper; (VI) Great Crested
Crebe. Dedication page "To The Queen's Most Gracious Majesty". Decorative
old private library plate to pastedown. Lower corners of few volumes bumped,
spin ends and edges mildly rubbed. Mild random foxing to marginal area of
some plates. All else very clean, tightly bound. Each in brodart polyester
wraps for protection.  Francis Orpen Morris (1810-1893) was educated at
Worcester College, Oxford, where he obtained his BA in 1833. He was ordained
deacon in 1834 and in 1844 became vicar of Nafferton near Driffield in East
Yorkshire. In 1854 he moved to the rectory of Nunburnholme, near Market
Weighton. He had a lifelong interest in natural history and became a writer
of textbooks on birds, moths and butterflies which he produced in
collaboration with the printer, Benjamin Fawcett. A  most impressive
