LEAF, Munro. /WEE GILLIS/. The Viking Press, New York City. Published
September, 1938. 1st edition. Small, slim 4to, unpaginated.
The second book by Munro Leaf (text), and Robert Lawson (drawings), the
Caldecott Award winning illustrator of /The Story of Ferdinand/. /Wee
Gillis/ concerns the relations between the Highlanders and Lowlanders of
Scotland, as seen through the eyes of Wee Gillis, a young Scottish lad.
Bound in tartan cross-hatch designed paper over half yellow cloth, with
green/blue lettering to spine. Small, neat, ink name on the front free
endpaper; else contents immaculate. There is slight wear to the tips of
the boards, and the binding is stressed at about the center of the book,
as from being opened too wide. There is no visible soiling to the
boards, which are exceptionally clean and bright. Overall, a very good
copy, indeed. The scarce dust jacket has about a two inch by one inch
piece missing from the back panel, and is chipped and worn across the
top, much less so across the bottom. The front and rear panels are a bit
scuffed, but not soiled. Overall, still in good condition, and now
encased in clear, archival quality acetate. A very attractive book and a
1939 Caldecott Honor award winning title.
