Springfield: Charles C Thomas, 1933. First printing, Full cloth, Octavo,
xix, 192 pages, black & white photographs, facsimiles. Fine in a very good
dust jacket, Jacket in Mylar protector.
      Fascinating memoir. Jesse Macy grew up in mid-western U.S. in the
tense years before the Civil War. His family were pioneers and western
abolitionists who were active in the Underground Railroad in Indiana and
Iowa. He was drafted into the Union Army in the Civil War and was a Quaker
non-combatant on Sherman's famous March to the Sea. He went on to became a
respected educator and political thinker in the late 19th and early 20th
centuries, and was a professor at his alma mater, Grinnell College, for 42
years. DORNBUSCH Vol. I, Iowa #133a. Bound in light grey cloth over boards
with gilt stamped spine and upper board lettering, blind stamped rule to
upper board. Very clean and tight copy. Jacket has edge chipping up to .25"
depth along top edges, some age toning, and a few light edge rubs.    $50.00
