Presentation copy from the editor ("ex dono John Fortescue Aland")
of the famed treatise of his ancestor, John Fortescue, "the
earliest constitutional treatise written in the English language",
written in the 1470's, but only first published in 1714.

One of the pre-eminent works on international law, first appearing
in the late 19th century, variously called "an epoch in the
literature" and "in the first rank", this copy in a prize binding
presented by The Incorporated Law Society.

An early edition of the first English law book to be printed (circa
1481), a work which Maitland called a "lucid and classical book on
the tenure of land" and which Holdsworth denominated one of the
five great books of English law.

The best early edition of Fleta, one of the few substantial
medieval English legal treatises, written in the late 13th century
and surviving in but a single manuscript; with Selden's masterly
dissertation "loaded . . . with his remarkable erudition.

The work which made Abbott's reputation (prior to his becoming
Chief Justice in King's Bench) enriched by Joseph Story's
scrupulous and impressive scholarship evident in his own notes,
often mini-essays in their own right, kept separate from Abbott's.

faculty member at Harvard Law School, the two of them having
successfully started the rejuvenation of the school only a few

written by the Lincoln's Inn bencher of whom Maitland thought
highly, and whose efforts to reform property law Maitland took up
towards the end of the century.
