Feltham's moral essays, orginally written when he was 18, and reprinted
many times in the century, through the 1660s, was meant as a guide to good,
godly and honorable life."The striking images (some borrowed by the poet
Henry Vaughan) are held to be more original than the ideas." Encyc. Brit.
11th Ed. Many sentences of his, first published here, have entered the
realm of proverbial usage in English. Here are a few examples: "There is
no one subsists by himself alone;" "Zeal without humanity is like a ship
without a rudder, liable to be stranded at any moment;" "Negligence is the
rust of the soul, that corrodes through all her best resolves;" "In
business, three things are necessary: knowledge, temper, and time;" "All
earthly delights are sweeter in expectation than in enjoyment; all
spiritual pleasures, more in fruition than in expectation;" "The best
things corrupted become the worst;" "Perfection is immutable. But for
things imperfect, change is the way to perfect them." The early editions
are quite scarce. CBEL I, 725; STC(2nd ed.), Lowndes 706; 10758, OCLC
finds 10 Locs. in the USA, [AZU, CGU, UIU, HHG, WTU, OSU, VA@, VTS,
GZN,YUS]. At Copac, copies are only at the Natl. Lib.of Scotland and at
Birmingham. Madan 264 is the 1661 edition, which has a Shakespearean
addition.The last leaf before the index contains "Deo authoris votum." The
title page is engraved. In this and subsequent editions the former second
part is printed first. With a new front free EP, and portions of the
backstrip renewed. Otherwise a Very Good copy. $850.00
