* Third edition. The Reformatio Legum Ecclesiasticarum is an expanded
version of the Henrican Canons, a proposed revision of Roman canon law
intended for the new Church of England written in 1552 by a commission
headed by Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury. One of the
first acts of the English Reformation, it is an important source of
information about the state of English canon law and church discipline
in the mid-Tudor period. It is also an important source of insights
into the challenges faced by the leaders of the reformed church. It
was later amended by Matthew Parker, who succeeded Cranmer, and edited
by John Foxe, who published it in 1571. Although it was never ratified
by Parliament, it was highly esteemed by later lawyers and was an
unofficial authority in ecclesiastical courts for many years. Wing,

necessary and of greatest authority and excellency." Compiled from the
earlier Natura Brevia and the Registrum Brevium, it includes several
original observations on the form and function of writs. Rastell's
revisions include the addition of a table. A popular work, it went
through numerous editions in Law French and English, the final
appearing in 1794. It remains significant to this day for its
descriptions of writs that were becoming obsolete in the early
sixteenth century. Pollard and Redgrave, Short-Title Catalogue of

laws and government of the United States and citizenship. As one would
suspect, the woodcut vignettes are mostly moralistic.

* First and second titles: first edition; third title: later edition.

The first book is the first modern critical edition of the
Sachsenspiegel [Mirror of the Saxons], a deeply influential collection
of territorial and feudal law compiled around 1230 by Eike von Repkow,
a knight and judge. It was the basis for several subsequent codes,
such as the Gorlitz Lawbook, the Breslau Territorial Law, the Dutch
Sachsenspiegel and the Berlin Townbook of Brandenburg Law. An
authority on civil law well into the nineteenth century, it was a
source for the German Civil Code (1896). The second book discusses
later additions to the Sachsenspiegel, its relation to current Saxon
law and its application in different parts of Saxony. The third work
is a version of the code adopted by the principality of Lower-Lusatia,
which is in present-day Prussia. OCLC locates 1 copy of the first
book, 3 copies of the second and 2 copies of an earlier edition of the
third. Ludovici was Professor of Law at the University of Halle and an
authority on civil law. He was also the first jurist to write a legal
treatise in German. First and second books: British Museum Catalogue

7. Advice for John Adams
Mably, Abbe [Gabriel Bonnot] de [1709-1785]. Remarks Concerning the
Government and the Laws of the United States of America in Four
Letters Addressed to Mr. Adams, Minister Plenipotentiary from the
United States of America to Those of Holland; And One of the
Negociators for the Purpose of Concluding a General Peace. From the
French with Notes by the Translator. Dublin: Printed for Messrs.
Moncrieffe, Jenkin, [et. al.], 1785. [ii], 280 pp. Octavo (4-3/4" x 7-
3/4"). Contemporary calf, rebacked retaining original spine with
lettering piece and gilt fillets. Light rubbing to boards, some wear
to corners, hinges mended. Light browning to edges of text block,
interior notably fresh. A handsome copy of a scarce title. $750.
* First Dublin edition in English. "In four letters dated between 24
July and 20 August 1783, the Abbe Mably comments on the American
approach to government as reflected in the constitutions of the
thirteen states, and, more specifically, those of Massachusetts,
Pennsylvania and Georgia. Replying to John Adams 'in accordance with
your desire,' he offers advice on a national constitution, urging a
loose federation rather than a strong central government and warning
against excessive democracy. The book is dedicated to Adams.... Adams,
in a postscript to V. 1 of his 1787 Defense of the Constitutions of
the United States...minimizes his 'desire' and is less than
appreciative of the advice. That work was probably designed in part as
a response to Mably and other French critics.": Cohen, Bibliography of
Early American Law (p.) 521. This edition not in Cohen. Sabin, A
Dictionary of Books Relating to America 42925. Howes, U.S.iana M-5.
