SANDYS, GEORGE: CHRIST'S PASSION	 A tragedy; with annotations. By Hugo 
Grotius : The second edition, illustrated with sculptures.  London, Printed 
by J. R. for T. Basset, at the George near S. Dunstans Church in 
Fleetstreet. 1687. 6 p. l., 107 p. 18 cm. A free translation of the 
Christus patiens of Grotius.  In 1621 he became treasurer of the London 
Company and accompanied the new governor, Sir Francis Wyatt, to Virginia, 
in 1621 where he remained until 1631, serving three terms on the governor's 
council. While in Virginia, Sandys produced his most famous work, a 
translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses (1626). His other works include 
paraphrases of the Psalms, hymns, and this free translation of Grotius' 
work under the title Christ's Passion: A Tragedy, first edition 1640. This 
was his second poetic work published.  CBEL, I, 444, Wing G2093. In this 
edition 6 full page plates showing the Passion of Christ have been added. 
The Frontis. which shows all of the symbols of the crucifixion, without any 
human form, is most effective. Pubs. Ad. p. [1]-[6] at end. Orig. calf
