1.  ABBOTT, Benjamin Vaughan.  The Travelling Law-School and Famous
Trials (First Lessons in Government and Law).  The Interstate

A lighter diversion undertaken by Abbott who, with his brother,
wrote prodigiously on the law; among the twelve trials examined are
those of Jennie Diver, Joan of Arc, Martin Guerre, Madame Rachel
and Elizabeth Canning.

2.  [ANSTEY, John].  The Pleader's Guide, A Didactic Poem, In Two
Parts: Containing . . . the Conduct of a Suit at Law [with] the
Arguments of Counsellor Bother'um and Counsellor Bore'um, in an
Action . . . Betwixt John-a-Gull and John-a-Gudgeon [etc.]. The
Seventh Edition.  Printed for T.Cadell, and W. Davies, Strand,

One of the better spoofs of English law popular throughout the 19th
century, characterized by Holdsworth as a work "[of] considerable
wit", three pages of its verses which he then can't resist quoting;
based, it is said, on Mr. Surrebutter's lectures.

3.  BALFOUR, James.  Practicks: Or, A System Of the more ancient
Law of Scotland.  Printed by Thomas and Walter Ruddimans, for A.

First edition of one of the most important of all works of Scots
law, written in the late 16th century and compared to Justinian's
Digest by Professor Walker, who calls it "the earliest extant
general compendium of the post-medieval law of Scotland".

4.  [BEAUCHAMP, Alphonse de].  Memoirs of Joseph Fouche, Duke of
Otranto, Minister of the General Police of France. Translated from
the French. Not in Cohen.  Wells and Lilly--Court-Street [etc.],

First American edition of the sole contemporary work in English on
Fouche, compiled in part from his notes, providing chilling insight
into the French revolutionary who "set the guillotine and cannon to
work with a rigour which made his name odious".

By far Broom's most famous work and almost certainly the most
popular work on legal maxims ever published, praised by Holdsworth,
with each maxim stated, translated, its source provided, and
Broom's essay (extensively annotated) then exploring it.

A rare work, comprehensively setting forth various conversion (and
other) tables, including those for interest, for commissions and
exchange, for converting to British money (Scots and otherwise) and
for weavers; one copy in RLIN (British Library).

The best sampler of the varied talents of Cotton, whose famed
library was incorporated into the British Museum; with essays on
the legality of combats and duels and on sovereignty and the
respective rights and powers of Parliament and the King.

One of several editions of an unusually and well printed work, the
forms printed vertically and surrounded by borders, thus clearly
presented and capable of being easily copied; the brief law
dictionary primarily 'translates' Latin terms.

The first edition, pirated, of the foremost classic of
international law, appearing a year after the first authorized
edition of 1625 and four years before the second authorized edition
of 1632; uncommon, four copies in the National Union Catalogue.

The principal early biography of Livingston, younger brother of
Chancellor Robert Livingston, famous in his own right for his
'System of Penal Laws' and later described by Sir Henry Maine as
"the first legal genius of modern times".
