The principal early biography of Livingston, younger brother of
Chancellor Robert Livingston, famous in his own right for his
'System of Penal Laws' and later described by Sir Henry Maine as
"the first legal genius of modern times".

Maitland's Ford Lectures, the second in that series, said to
possess "the greatest charm of all Maitland's writings", seeking to
trace "the transition from rural to urban habits", with an emphasis
on Maitland's garrison theory of the borough.

A sensationally-phrased but amazingly perceptive contemporary
analysis of the Popish Plot, written just after the acquittal of
George Wakeman and others had swung the balance against Oates,
supposedly written by a former clerk to an imaginary judge.

The principal contemporary account of the trial of the plot's
conspirators, leading to the execution of Lord Russell (and
Algernon Sydney) and contributing mightily if indirectly to the

infamous--trial for high treason, based in part on his
then-unpublished 'Discourses', one of two works which Jefferson

England and this country, "none more eloquently . . . preserv[ing]
the independence and integrity of jurors" against intrusions of
