reforms of 1935 in the Government of India Act, the "last and, in
the event, the most portentous essay [by the British] in balancing
and ruling India" prior to Independence in 1947.

Maine's ambitious effort to analyze early Irish (Brehon) and Hindu
law, designed to demonstrate that the former had spread to India at
an early date, well before the 5th century B.C., and that both had
remained untouched by later Roman law.

Maine's first foray into the law of the Indian subcontinent, in
which he posits fundamental differences between land-holding in the
East and West; this third (and best) edition including Maine's Rede
Lecture and six other essays and addresses.

The only case we can find depicting the talents of Manomohan Ghose,
the one lawyer singled out by Ghandi for "defend[ing] many a poor
man free of charge", here saving a humble watchman who had been
sentenced to death due to official corruption.

A rare edition of the popular biography (seven editions in 40
years) of the Indian lawyer and judge on the High Court of Bengal,
and brother of the noted nationalist, Hurrish Chunder Mookerjee,
