1.	AHMED VASIF EFENDI: MEHASIN UL-ASAR VE HAKAYIK UL-AHBAr.[ the official
Ottoman chronicle for 1752-1774]. [Istanbul, Dar al-T.aba-?ah
al-?A-mirah, 1219, 1804-05] 2 v. in 1. 28 cm., Small folio. In Ottoman
Turkish, with Arabic colophon. It is also cited under the title: Tarih-i
Vâsif and Vâsif tarihi. "The greater part of the second volume is from the
pen of Enverî." Encyclopedia of Islam, v. 4 (1934), p. 1127. This is the
first part of the chronicle which was published, covering the reign of
Mustafa the III from 1757 to 1773, and a little more. The remaining
portions remain in manuscript or have been published in the 20th century.
The printing of this book was part of the Nizam-i Cedid (New Order), the
first effort by the Ottomans to implement reforms based on European
[primarily French] models. Instituted by Sultan Selim III (1789-1807), the
"New Order" attempted to incorporate European military, technical, economic
and administrative achievements into the Ottoman system. There is only one
paper copy of this book in an American library, at Harvard. At COPAC a
second copy can be found at Manchester, There are no copies at OCLC or KVK.
The BN has only a 1994 reprint. This copy is in an original, period,
Ottoman, calf, binding with decorative gilt designs on both boards. The
spine has similar designs, and the title is in gold. The original end
papers of a glazed yellow with floral motifs in greens, reds and pinks are
still in place. The back strip, has a call number on it, a small, early
library stamp is found on the rear free end paper, otherwise it is a lovely
copy of a rarity. $3250.00

2.	KORSAK, JULJAN: POEZIJE JULIANA KORSAKA.[Poetry by Julian Korsak] St.
Petersburg. Nakladem autora, drukiem Karola Kraya. 1830. 7 p. l., [3]-256,
X, [2], 256 s. ; 23 cm. 18 cm. First Edition of his First Book. With
classical title page and closing vignettes. This copy agrees at its end with
the pagination of that at the Polish National Library, and not with that at
Harvard and does not have viii pages at the end with an errata
leaf. However, It has more pages before the numbered pagination than
either copy. Korsak was an important cultural figure, born in the out
lying province of Novogrodek, where he was the ambassador of his community
at Novgrodek, the capitol, he kept up literary correspondence and
friendships with many significant figures of his period. He later
translated into Polish, Dante's Divine Comedy, and Shakespeare's Romeo and
Juliet, and also wrote and published a number of original plays. This helps
to explain the publication of this book by the imperial theatre in St.
Petersburg. Many poems have classical allusions and he includes a
translation from Pindar, as well as a number of works in the mood of
Anacreon, praising love and wine. The book is rare and significant. This
copy is an astonishingly mint one, uncut and unopened, still in printed
wrappers as it came from the printer. Each wrap has classical vignettes
different from those in the body of the text $500.00

the first portrait and a dedication in copper plate. The first biography is
of herself. She has a veil over her face, and she is coy about providing
much information, hiding in the prose as well as in the plate, which none
the less reveals her beautiful features, as the text reveals her
personality. Many of the Portraits are of men who were drawn to her salon
in Venice, where her intelligence and grace shone. Men such as Pindemonte,
Canova, Foscolo, Cesarotti, Flagmen and Byron. Her portraits in prose as
well as the beautiful etched portraits have been famous ever since. There
