For Sale: A. Edward Newton's copy of New York as Washington Knew it after the Revolution, by William Loring Andrews.

Andrews, William Loring. New York as Washington Knew it after the Revolution. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1905. 8vo. Layered paper boards with vellum over yellow. Gilt lettering and decoration. T.e.g. xvi, 92 pages. 15 illustrations, including a map of New York, all designed and engraved by Sidney L. Smith, plus three additional illustrations. All tissue guards present. One of 135 copies printed upon French hand-made paper (with an additional 32 upon Imperial Japan paper). Plain dust jacket, lacking spine, with many tears, and heavily soiled, is present. Andrews notes that this is “a study in book-making in plain black and white in which typography and copper-plates engraved by hand are the only agencies employed.” WITH THE OAK KNOLL BOOKPLATE OF A. EDWARD NEWTON. This book was listed as number 23 in the 1941 auction catalog of Newton’s books. Listed as uncut in the sale catalog, that is no longer the case. Andrews was an important bibliophile, a creator of beautiful books,
and a founding member and president of the Grolier Club. From 1890-1920 Newton and Andrews overlapped as members of the Club. This is thus an important association copy of a beautiful book. Spine is toned. Notation in pencil on rear endpaper, noting the price paid for this book in 1918. Near Fine. $300.00 postpaid.
