1.  [BLACKSTONE, William].  An Analysis of the Laws of England.
Eller 217.  Printed at the Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1756. Contemporary calf, 
rubbed, joints cracked, the spine hand-lettered,

First edition of the analytical schema underlying Blackstone's
"Commentaries", providing us with the syllabus used by Blackstone
for his Vinerian lectures at Oxford, crafted over many years as the
first university lectures on English law.

Twelfth part of the Reports [bound with] A Catalogue of Law Bookes,
and such as appertain to the Law [bound with] Books Printed for .

First edition in English of the first twelve parts of Coke's
Reports (so famous as to be cited simply as The Reports), bound
with two early, rare catalogues, one devoted just to law and the
other partly so, each recorded in one copy only in ESTC.

3.  COODE, George.  On Legislative Expression; Or, The Language of
the Written Law [etc.]. Second Edition.  Thomas Turpin, 43, Fleet
Street; and James Ridgway [etc.], London, 1852.  Early orange
cloth, gilt, a crease to the front board, which is somewhat
spotted, a bit strained, some markings, yet a good copy. [71205

A classic tract full of examples of good--and bad--legal language
and exposition, written by "the [mid-19th century's] leading
authority on legislative drafting" (in Bryan Garner's words), still
highly regarded; not that common, three copies in OCLC.

4.  [EARLY LAW REPORTS].  Speciall and Selected Law-Cases,
Concerning the Persons and Estates of all men whatsoever. Collected
and gathered out of the Reports, and Year-Books of the Common-Law
of England. Wing S4837. Quarto.  Printed by M.F. and are to be sold
by William Cooke [etc.], London, 1641.  Modern morocco, gilt, a bit
of foxing and a trace of worming, discreetly ex-library, but a good
copy, with several maxims noted in a contemporary hand. [71183

First edition of one of the earliest collections of reports to be
published (the ninth noted by Holdsworth), Wallace observing "[t]he
book is rare", with cases primarily from the reigns of Henry VII
through Elizabeth; digested and arranged by subject.

5.  [EARLY LEGAL BIOGRAPHY].  The Life of the Late Honourable
Robert Price, Esq; One Of the Justices of His Majesty's Court of
Common-Pleas [etc.]. Straus, Unspeakable Curll pp.297-98.  Printed
by the Appointment of the Family [etc.], London, 1734. Contemporary sheep, 
rebacked, ex-library, conceivably a variant
issuance, without the will and preliminary leaves (identifying

One of the few early biographies of an English judge, the "honest
and painstaking . . . patriot of his native country [Wales]" whose
sturdy independence of the King was renowned; with a manuscript
ancestral lineage on the rear pastedown.

6.  [ERSKINE, THOMAS].  A Solemn Appeal to the Public, From . . .
Captain Baillie . . . Arising Out of a Series of Authentic
Proceedings in the Court of King's-Bench . . . For publishing
certain Libels . . . and the Evidence Given . . . at the Bar of the
House of Lords [etc.].  Printed for Captain Baillie by J. Almon
[etc.], London, 1779.  Original straight-grained crimson morocco,
the spine and joints rubbed, but still an exceptionally appealing

Erskine's first case, immediately establishing his reputation as an
advocate of the first rank, successfully defending Captain Thomas
Baillie whose allegations of pervasive corruption in the English
navy had resulted in criminal libel charges.

and Commons, at the Free Conference, Held in the Painted Chamber .

The crucial debate leading within days to the Declaration of Rights
and the crowning of William and Mary, focusing on the fundamental
nature of the monarchy, this its "very full report" in Professor
Schwoerer's words, and the edition she relies upon.

The last edition upon which Grotius was to work, published
posthumously and including matter he had deemed prudent to exclude
from previous editions, this the text chosen by the Carnegie
Endowment as the basis for its edition earlier in this century.

The variorum edition and still the standard, called by Dumas Malone
"the most complete and accurate that has yet appeared", ably
collating the several versions of the essays as they originally
appeared and for the first time establishing their texts.
