COLDEN, Cadwallader. [MEMOIR PREPARED AT THE REQUEST OF
A COMMITTEE ... AT THE CELEBRATION OF THE COMPLETION OF THE
NEW YORK CANALS]. [New York]: [Corporation of New York]
[1825]. First Edition. Quarto (7-7/8" x 9-3/8") bound in
modern blue morocco-backed boards with gilt lettering on the
spine. [1], 7-408, [2] pages. Illustrated with 46 of the 47
listed lithographs (the portrait of Colden is lacking and
present in photocopy), many folding including two large hand-
colored maps (one of the United States and one of the state
of New York), as well as one lithograph and 8 lithographed
facsimiles not listed. In addition another extra lithograph
and a wood engraving are pasted to the verso of two listed
plates. All lithographs executed by Anthony Imbert, called
by Harry Peters the pioneer lithographer of New York City.
Howes C-562; American Imprints 20118; Peters, America on
Stone, pp. 228-232. The map of the United States locates the
Oregon Territory, Mexico which includes present day
California and the American Southwest, etc. In addition to
the portrait, also lacking and present in photocopy are the
general title page (another example of an internal engraved
title page is used as the general title page), the 3-page
preface, the half title page, the 2-page Directions for
Placing the Plates, and the first 2 leaves of text.
Occasional light to moderate foxing, less than normal with
this title. Text pages 67-68 with long tape-repaired tear.
Plate between pages 204-205 also repaired with tape. Overall
a Very Good copy of this rare and attractive book. $1000.00
