(translator). THE MEMOIRS OF COUNT CARLO GOZZI. London: John
C. Nimmo 1890. First Edition. Two large octavo volumes
(6-3/4" x 10-1/2") in original red and green cloth-backed
boards with elaborate gilt-decorated shields on the front
cover of each. Babington 50. The Large Paper issue, this
being #8 of 210 copies illustrated with a portrait and six
original etchings by Adolphe Lalauze (in duplicate in this
issue) and eleven plates depicting figures from Italian
comedy by Maurice Sand, engraved on copper by A. Manceau and
colored by hand. With essays by the translator on Italian
impromptu comedy, Gozzi's life, the Dramatic Fables, and
Pietro Longhi. JOHN DUKE COLERIDGE's copy with his signature
dated 1889 on a front blank of the first volume. Baron
Coleridge, the great nephew of Samuel Taylor Coleridge,
served as Attorney General (1871), Chief Justice of Common
Pleas (1873-1880), and Chief Justice of Queen's Bench
(1880-1894). Both volumes with deteriorated spines neatly
covered some time ago with smooth binder's cloth tape
allowing the books to be used. But for the taped spines,
nice copies. $150.00
