Dahl, Roald, Some Time Never, a Fable for Superman, Charles Scribner's &
Sons, NY 1948 - First Edition: First published in the United States by
Scribner's in 1948, in England a year later by Collins. A story about
nuclear war; Dahl expands his story about the Gremlins (from his first
novel) and wrote a blend of prophecy, fantasy and realism in this story
about the end of the world. Gremlins the original rulers of the earth in
ages past are forced to live underground with the advent of man. Out for
revenge the Battle of Britian ensues; realizing that man will eventually
destroy himself they once again retreat underground. The atom bomb and
WWIII, and finally in WW IV man's folly leads him to self-extermination. Red
cloth boards and spine, mild spotty fading. DJ not price clipped, black and
red, illustrations to front, small chips to edges and corners, rear lower
edge 2 x 4 inch V shaped chip. Rear cover white "Have you ever seen a
Gremlin?" description. First edition "A" to copyright page. Very clean text,
solidly bound. In brodart mylar cover. 8 vo, 244 pages. Note: This was
Dahl's second novel.  Dahl in later years (1960's) became well known for his
Children's books: James & the Giant Peach; the book that produced Willy
Wonka and the Chocolate Factory "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"; film
script for "You Only Live Twice"; screen play of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"

Will, P. - The Horrid Mysteries, Two Volumes, published by, Robert Holden &
Co, London, 1927, First thus: One of the novels named in the Northanger
Canon (a list of books appearing in Jane Austen's "Northhanger Abbey") was
the story of the Marquis of Grosse which was translated from the German by
Peter Will and published by William Lane at the Minerva Press in London in
1796. It is said that the original edition is virtually unobtainable, and
this 1927 edition stands as the earliest modern reprint.  The hero of the
tale, the Marquis of Grosse, becomes caught up against his will in a secret
society, the Illuminati, that advocates murder, anarchy, and a preliminary
form of communism. He implements various plans to foil the society: not only
does he flee to other countries to escape, he sets up a rival society of
fascists to demolish the Illuminati. In spite of the marquis's best efforts,
he is continually drawn back in again. As is so often the case in the
Gothic, there is no hope of escape for him. Two volumes, Yellow color
pictorial boards, spines mildly darkened, pictorial; rubbed to spine hinges
and few chips to hinge area, spine appears to have been rebacked. Each
volume is number respectively to the spine and pastedown  A377, A 378; also
the pastedown is stamped, Please return to the Story Dept. RKO Studios, Inc.
West Coast. Binding is very tight, text clean. Vol II has a closed tear
across upper page end. All else very good. Protected in heavy weight brodart
film. A scarce selection of Gothic Literature. 8 vo, 268, 231 pages First
