Lincoln, Levi R. & Samuel Eveleth. TARIFF: OR RATES OF DUTIES, payable from
and after the 3d of March, 1833, on all Goods, Wares and Merchandise
imported into the United States of America, in American Vessels.

Boston; Samuel Condon: 1832.

"With a compendium of custom house regulations, and an abstract of revenue
laws relating thereto".

In addition to a mind-numbing number of actual tariff acts, the heart of
the book is an alphabetical listing of the tariffs (or lack thereof) on
everything from Absynth, a Cordial (free) to Zebra Wood, in rough planks
(also free). An interesting and useful guide to American imports of
finished and raw goods in the 1830s. One sees the influence of various
lobbying groups at work- glass wares were charged at 2 cents a pound plus
20%, but cut glass was charged at 3 cents a pound plus 30%; linen
handkerchiefs were charged a 25% tariff, while silk handkerchiefs from
beyond the Cape of Good Hope were only charged 10%, and silk handkerchiefs
from other places 5%. Japanned wares were charged 25%, except japanned
saddles, which were charged 10%. Includes some China Trade material.

Hardcover. 4.5"x7.25", 163 + 4 pages; original period boards with linen
spine and original printed green spine label; covers with some soil, a
little wear; label chipped; a little internal foxing and browning; old
Essex Institute label; (illegible) 1833 ownership signature. [05988] $150.00
