A valuable edition of Bentham's 'Traites de Legislation', the
translation by the Harvard-trained lawyer and educator Richard
Hildreth, himself called "the American Bentham" whose 'Theory of
Morals' set forth a Benthamite philosophical system.

2.  [COKE IN VERSE].  The Reports of Sir Edward Coke, Kt. In Verse;
wherein The Name of each Case and the Principal Points are
contained in two Lines. To which are added References in the Margin
to All the Editions of the said Reports [etc.]. New Edition [with
a Life of Coke].  J. & W.T. Clarke, Law Booksellers and Publishers
[etc.], London, 1825.  Original printed boards, rubbed and quite
chipped, some pencil notations, else a very good untrimmed

A delightful little book, mnemonically rendering every case in
Coke's Reports in a two line verse, originally published (in 1742)
by John Worrall, the famed law bookseller, who thought it would
"afford a pleasing recreation to gentlemen of the law".

4.  COOKSEY, Richard.  Essay on the Life and Character of John Lord
Somers . . . Also Sketches of an Essay on the Life and Character of
Philip Earl of Hardwicke [etc.].  Printed by J. Holl; (for the
author.) And sold by J. Bew [etc.], Worcester, 1791.  Later calf,
gilt, quite rubbed, label lacking, title trimmed not affecting
text, some foxing, ex-library, else (and despite this litany) a

A principal contemporary account (the only I can locate in book
form) of John Somers and Philip Yorke, two of England's pre-eminent
early modern lawyers, a rich mix of contributions by Cooksey,
Defoe, Walpole, and Jeremiah Bentham, among many others.

5.  [CRIMINAL CONVERSATION].  Crim. Con., Actions and Trials and
Other Legal Proceedings Relating to Marriage before the Passing of

A review of the most famous crim con cases spanning three
centuries, in which husbands sued their wives' paramours for civil
damages caused by the "criminal conversation" and ensuing loss of
consortium; with two involving Thomas Erskine as counsel.

Church-Power, Laid down in the Codex Juris Ecclesiastici Anglicani. Printed for

First edition of Foster's pointed criticism of Edmund Gibson's
high-church doctrines (leaving the Church essentially unregulated
in spiritual matters), contributing significantly to Foster's
reputation as "the Magna Charta of liberty of persons".

Sir Dudley Ryder, Mr. Charles Yorke, Mr. William Beckford, &c. On
the Choice of a Regency or Regent; with Other Discussions on That

torn with loss of several words on its verso (but not the sense);

Part of the debate during the mental incapacity of George III (no
provision for succession having been made), publishing a series of
arguments bruited when the 1751 Regency Bill, providing for his own
succession while a minor, had been enacted.

The reissue of the English translation of Grotius' magnum opus
appearing in the Classics of International Law, itself taken from
the 1646 edition, the last upon which Grotius worked, and in which
he included matter not appearing in previous editions.

Companion: Containing The Laws, Statutes, and Customs relating to
Freehold and other Estates . . . In which is compriz'd The whole

Only edition of Jacob's only major work on real property, treating
comprehensively of everything from fee simples to copyhold,
including the right to kill game, distresses for rent, replevin and
